Of everything on a Google Business Profile, categories do the most work with the least attention. They're set once, during onboarding, and then almost never revisited — even as a business changes what it actually does.
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches your listing is even eligible to show up for. A plumber miscategorized as a "hardware store" isn't just ranking lower for plumbing searches — they may not be competing for them at all.
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| Leftover from setup | A bakery still listed as "Restaurant" from a template used when the profile was first created. |
| Business evolved, category didn't | A general contractor who now specializes in kitchen remodels, still categorized only as "General Contractor." |
| Too narrow | A full-service auto shop categorized only as "Oil Change Service," missing broader repair searches entirely. |
A quarterly review is enough for most small businesses — more often if you've recently added a new service line, opened a second location, or noticed a nearby competitor shift their own categories.
